Where it came from
Released in 1978 on the Sonafric label, this soundtrack accompanies Jacques Champreux's film Bako, l'autre rive, which explores the harrowing realities of West African migration to France. The music was composed and performed by Lamine Konté, a renowned Senegalese musician and master of the kora, whose work serves as a bridge between traditional Mandinka musical heritage and the socio-political narratives of the late 1970s diaspora.
The album reflects Konté's deep commitment to preserving oral traditions while engaging with modern cinematic storytelling. By integrating the delicate, resonant textures of the kora with the evocative atmosphere of the film, Konté provides a sonic landscape that underscores the displacement and longing inherent in the immigrant experience. The record remains a significant artifact of African film music and a testament to Konté's influential role in bringing Senegalese instrumentation to international audiences during this period.
