Where it came from
Laminated Denim was released by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in 2022, shortly after their album Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava. The record was conceived as a companion piece to that session, featuring two continuous tracks, 'The Land Before Timeland' and 'Hypertension', which were built upon rhythmic structures originally intended for the band's earlier album, Timeland. The project reflects the band's penchant for spontaneous, krautrock-inspired jamming and their dedication to releasing music rapidly through their independent label, p(doom) records.
The album's title and distinctive packaging design are rooted in the band's playful and often cryptic aesthetic. The name Laminated Denim is an anagram for 'Made in Timeland', emphasizing the connection to their previous experimental release. The artwork and physical presentation, characterized by a lack of traditional marketing or lead singles, lean into the band's preference for an authentic, listener-focused discovery process, which has helped them build a uniquely loyal following within the modern psychedelic rock scene.
