Where it came from
Laminated Denim was released in October 2022 as the twenty-first studio album by the Australian psychedelic rock band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. The album serves as a companion piece to the band's concurrently released record, Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava, consisting of two lengthy, improvisation-heavy tracks titled The Land Before Timeland and Hypertension. It was recorded during the same sessions that produced the band's album Omnium Gatherum, reflecting the group's highly prolific and experimental creative cycle during that year.
The album's title is an anagram of 'Made in Timeland', referring to a previous limited-release record that had been available only at select live shows. Designed by the band's longtime collaborator Jason Galea, the artwork features his signature surrealist and gritty aesthetic, utilizing vibrant, abstract textures that evoke the tactile theme of the title. Upon its release, the record was received by fans as a showcase of the band's technical prowess, particularly noted for its intricate rhythmic structures and seamless transition between improvisational jams and composed melodic sections.
