Where it came from
Released in 1980 on the Solesmes label, this recording captures the liturgical chants of the Christmas season as performed by the Monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. Under the direction of Dom Jean Claire, the ensemble sought to preserve the purity of the Gregorian tradition, emphasizing the monophonic, meditative quality inherent in early church music. This release follows a long tradition of the Abbey acting as a primary authority on the preservation and restoration of Gregorian chant through their scholarly musicological work.
The design and presentation of this record reflect the ascetic and scholarly focus of the Solesmes community. By centering the repertoire on the Midnight Mass and the Mass of the Day, the collection provides a liturgical experience that prioritizes historical accuracy over modern arrangement. Within the context of classical and religious music circles, these recordings are highly regarded for their technical precision and their role in maintaining an unbroken oral tradition of monastic prayer.
