Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Argo label, this recording serves as a significant entry in the 'Head' series, which was dedicated to contemporary twentieth-century music. The collection highlights the development of European modernism, bridging the gap between the late Romanticism of Busoni and the structural rigors of his successors, such as Dallapiccola and Wolpe. By presenting these works together, the label sought to bring academic and avant-garde compositions to a broader audience of classical listeners during a decade when modern music was increasingly finding a home on boutique high-fidelity imprints.
The album is noted for its high production quality and the participation of esteemed performers like soprano Heather Harper and conductor Frederik Prausnitz. The curation reflects a shift in mid-1970s classical music appreciation, where complex, non-tonal works were being re-evaluated through the lens of atmospheric and technical precision. The reception was largely positive among critics and scholars, who praised the release for its intellectual rigor and for documenting essential performances of works that were often underrepresented in the standard concert repertoire of the era.
