Where it came from
Released in 1970 on the Psallite label, this recording features the American organist George Markey performing the works of Maurice Duruflé on the Klais organ of the St. Kilian's Cathedral in Würzburg. The choice of instrument is significant, as the Klais organ is renowned for its tonal versatility, providing a sophisticated soundscape for Duruflé’s impressionistic and technically demanding compositions.
The recording serves as a historical document of the collaboration between the French composer’s liturgical style and the German organ-building tradition of the mid-20th century. While Duruflé was a master of his craft, these recordings were intended to showcase the specific acoustic capabilities of the Würzburg instrument, capturing a moment in the cathedral's musical life before later renovations altered its sound profile.
