"Grande Sonate" In A Major For Guitar And Violin, Tarantella In A Minor, Six Sonatas, Op. 3 For Violin And Guitar

Released in 1966 on the His Master's Voice label, this recording features the virtuoso collaboration of guitarist Oscar Ghiglia and violinist Régis Pasquier. The repertoire explores the chamber music compositions of Niccolò Paganini, a composer best known for his pyrotechnic violin works but who also demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of the guitar, an instrument he played proficiently throughout his life. This release serves as an interpretation of Paganini's sonatas for violin and guitar, bridging the gap between his virtuosic violin style and his intimate melodic sense for the guitar.

The album reflects the mid-century revival of interest in historical chamber works that demanded both technical precision and nuanced stylistic interpretation. By pairing Pasquier’s lyrical violin lines with Ghiglia’s disciplined guitar accompaniment, the recording emphasizes the balance between the two instruments intended by Paganini. It was received as a competent addition to the catalog of Paganini's lesser-known chamber works, maintaining the standards of quality associated with the His Master's Voice classical series during the mid-1960s.
