Schwanensee-Ballett Op.20 · Dornröschen-Ballett Op.66 · Nussknacker-Suite Op.71a

Released in 1962 on the Philips label, this collection brings together highlights from Tchaikovsky's three major ballets under the baton of conductors Pierre Monteux and Anatole Fistoulari. The selection features the London Symphony Orchestra, a pairing that reflects the label’s mid-century effort to capture high-fidelity interpretations of the Romantic repertoire during a period of significant expansion in the classical recording industry.

The design and curation of this release emphasize the enduring popularity of Tchaikovsky’s melodic storytelling. By grouping the suites and core movements of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, Philips sought to provide a comprehensive listening experience that appealed to both dedicated collectors and the broader audience for symphonic ballet music. The recording is well-regarded for the nuanced, disciplined approach brought by Monteux, whose reputation for clarity and rhythmic precision remains a hallmark of this era's orchestral documentation.
