Schwanensee-Suite Op. 20 / Suite Aus Dornröschen Op. 66a / Polonaise Aus Eugen Onegin

This 1969 release on the East German label Eterna features the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Polish conductor Witold Rowicki. It captures Tchaikovsky’s most iconic ballet suites alongside the polonaise from Eugene Onegin, a repertoire that serves as a cornerstone of the late Romantic orchestral tradition. The recording reflects the artistic bridge between the Eastern Bloc cultural institutions and the enduring legacy of Tchaikovsky’s melodic mastery, showcasing the precision and lush string textures favored by Rowicki during his tenure with the orchestra.

The Eterna label, based in the German Democratic Republic, was renowned for its high-quality pressings and dedication to classical music, often distributing these recordings to an international audience through collaboration with state-run institutions. The design of this specific release adheres to the label’s minimalist aesthetic of the era, emphasizing the stature of the composer and the prestige of the performance. Critics and listeners have long lauded this particular pairing of Rowicki and the Warsaw Philharmonic for its technical clarity and the emotive, disciplined interpretations of these staples of the symphonic repertoire.
