Sechs Präludien Und Fugen Op. 35 / Fantasie Fis-moll Op. 28

Released in 1986 on the Calig label, this recording features the German pianist Gitti Pirner interpreting Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s solo piano works. The collection includes the Six Preludes and Fugues, Op. 35, and the Fantasia in F-sharp minor, Op. 28, often referred to as the 'Scottish Sonata.' These works represent Mendelssohn’s deep affinity for the Baroque forms of Johann Sebastian Bach, integrated with his own lyrical, early-Romantic sensibilities.

Gitti Pirner, a distinguished pedagogue and performer known for her technical precision and intellectual approach to the German repertoire, brought a refined clarity to this performance. Calig produced this disc as part of a mission to document standard and rare classical repertoire through high-fidelity recordings. The album was well-regarded by collectors of the era for its balanced acoustic quality and the deliberate, nuanced phrasing that Pirner applied to Mendelssohn’s intricate polyphonic textures.
