Where it came from
Released in 2019, Sex Robot emerged as an experimental multimedia project involving Sidsel Meineche Hansen and a collective of collaborators, including Asger Hartvig, Holger Hartvig, Anders Hjortdal Andersen, Adam Christensen, Jack Brennan, Tom Hirst, and Viki Steiri. The work functions as both a musical composition and a conceptual extension of Hansen’s broader artistic investigation into the intersections of robotics, labor, and the commodification of intimacy in the digital age.
The project was designed to challenge conventional boundaries between machine-generated sound and human performance. By integrating synthesized audio with collaborative experimental production, the contributors aimed to critique how automated systems mirror human desire and social structures. Received primarily within contemporary art and experimental music circles, the record serves as a sonic artifact of Hansen's multidisciplinary residency and exhibition practices, prioritizing intellectual inquiry over traditional commercial distribution.
