Lore

Why it matters

This ETERNA release pairs the virtuosic orchestral color of Leopold Mozart and Johann Friedrich Fasch with Haydn’s celebrated Symphony No. 31, a work famously nicknamed the "Hornsignal" for its complex writing for four horns. Collectors often seek out these East German pressings for their distinctively warm, clear acoustic character and for how they showcase the evolution of the brass section in mid-18th-century compositions.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the East German state-owned label ETERNA, this recording reflects the label's commitment to high-fidelity classical releases during the mid-20th century. ETERNA served as the primary archive for the Deutsche Schallplatten organization, focusing on bridging the gap between Western classical canon and the virtuosic traditions favored in the German Democratic Republic.

This particular pressing brings together disparate works of the 18th century, featuring the trumpet and horn music of Haydn, Fasch, and Leopold Mozart. The design adheres to the austere yet refined aesthetic favored by VEB Deutsche Schallplatten, often utilizing understated cover art that emphasized the intellectual rigor of the musical selections over commercial flair. It was received as a standard reference pressing for chamber orchestra repertoire within the Eastern Bloc.
