Sonaten fur Violine & Klavier Op.posth.137 Nr.1-3 D-dur, D384-a-moll, D385-gmoll, D408

Released in 1978 on the Telefunken label, this recording features violinist Vera Beths and pianist Stanley Hoogland performing Franz Schubert’s Sonatinas for Violin and Piano, Op. posth. 137. Schubert originally composed these three works in 1816, a period in his life when he was prolific but struggling for public recognition. The pieces were intended for domestic music-making rather than grand concert halls, reflecting the intimacy of the Viennese Biedermeier era.

The recording is notable for its commitment to historically informed performance practices, utilizing period-appropriate instruments to capture the texture and balance Schubert intended. Beths and Hoogland aimed to strip away the heavy romantic interpretation often applied to Schubert’s chamber music, focusing instead on the lighter, articulate phrasing characteristic of the early nineteenth century. Upon its release, the set was well-regarded by critics for its clarity and scholarly approach to the repertoire.
