Where it came from
Released in 2024, Xstory serves as a career-spanning retrospective of XTerminator, the influential Jamaican production house and record label founded by Philip 'Fatis' Burrell. The compilation encapsulates the label's rich history from its inception in 1987 through 2011, documenting the evolution of roots reggae and dancehall during a pivotal era for the genre. It captures the transition from traditional analog recording techniques to the crisp, hard-hitting digital soundscapes that defined the studio's aesthetic under Burrell's leadership.
The collection showcases the work of the various vocalists and musicians who defined the XTerminator sound, including Sizzla, Luciano, and Beres Hammond. Curated to reflect the label's deep cultural resonance, the design of the release emphasizes the legacy of Burrell's production style, which was characterized by a balance of spiritually conscious lyrics and innovative, bass-heavy instrumentation. The compilation is intended for both long-time aficionados of the label's back catalog and new listeners seeking an overview of one of Jamaica's most productive studios.
