Yamalak Yasada / Nenu Yanenu

Released in 1972 on the legendary Amha Records label, this single by Hassan Atya represents a distinct moment in the Ethiopian musical landscape. Amha Eshete, the label’s founder, was instrumental in fostering the ‘Swinging Addis’ era, providing a platform for artists to blend traditional Ethiopian melodies with modern jazz, funk, and soul influences. This recording captures the vibrant transition of Addis Ababa’s nightlife and the creative freedom that defined the early 1970s before the political upheavals of the mid-decade.

The production reflects the characteristic sound of the era, defined by tight arrangements and the soulful, rhythmic explorations of Ethiopian vocalists. While specific design credits for the sleeve art of AE 490 are often attributed to the label’s house style, which prioritized bold, utilitarian aesthetics to distribute music quickly across the country, the record remains a sought-after artifact by enthusiasts of Ethio-jazz and global funk. It serves as a testament to the prolific nature of the Addis Ababa recording scene, where musicians were rapidly experimenting with new sounds and recording technologies.
