Where it came from
The Fissure spell card was first released in the 2002 Starter Deck: Yugi, which served as one of the two foundational products that introduced the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game to Western markets. Designed to mimic the strategic experience of the anime series, the deck provided players with essential utility cards to navigate early gameplay, with Fissure specifically serving as a staple removal effect for dealing with a opponent's face-up monster.
The card’s design reflects the early era of the game where simple, high-impact removal was critical to maintaining board control. While the illustration depicts a simple earth-shattering effect, the card became a defining element of the introductory meta, favored for its versatility and ease of use in casual and competitive play before the card pool expanded significantly in later sets.
