Where it came from
Fissure was first released in the Starter Deck: Joey in 2003, a product designed to mirror the deck composition of the character Joey Wheeler from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime. As a common spell card within this set, it was intended to provide new players with accessible, straightforward removal options, allowing them to destroy the face-up monster with the lowest defense on the opponent's field.
The card’s design features simple, functional artwork that reflects the early aesthetic of the Konami Trading Card Game. While it does not boast the complexity of later tactical cards, its role as a fundamental board-clearing tool made it a staple for beginners learning the game's mechanics, and it remains a recognizable relic from the formative era of the franchise's western expansion.
