Provenance

Where it came from

The Mask of Restrict was released as part of the Labyrinth of Nightmare booster set in 2002, marking a significant moment in the expansion of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game outside of Japan. As a continuous trap card, it was designed to disrupt the core mechanics of the game by prohibiting players from Tributing monsters, a strategy intended to counter powerful high-level summon tactics that dominated the early competitive landscape.

The card features artwork depicting a malevolent, ornate mask, consistent with the dark, gothic aesthetic favored by the Labyrinth of Nightmare set. While the specific illustrator at Konami remains uncredited, the design was crafted to visually convey the oppressive nature of the card's effect. Upon its release, it became a staple in side decks for tournament players looking for a hard counter to Tribute-heavy strategies, securing its place as a recognizable piece of early-2000s dueling history.
