Provenance

Where it came from

Soul Release was first introduced to the English-language market in 2002 as part of the Metal Raiders booster set, the second expansion released for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Originating from the Japanese OCG set Metal Raiders, the card was designed as a strategic utility spell intended to disrupt graveyard-reliant mechanics by allowing players to banish up to five cards from either player's graveyard.

The card's artwork features a distinct, monochromatic illustration typical of the game's early aesthetic, emphasizing the somber theme of removing spirits from their final resting place. While it began as a common-rarity utility piece, its design has proven enduringly relevant in the game's competitive landscape, as the ability to interact with the graveyard has remained a fundamental tactical consideration throughout the history of the card game.
