Cat Soup is an extremely difficult film to describe, due to its awesome surrealism and almost nonexistant dialogue. It is more a work of art than an anime. There are many underlying themes, such as the transcience of man's existence, but it can be enjoyed without understanding any of them. The plot, though simple, isn't necessarily understandable without being explained. The main character, a cat named Nyatto, embarks upon a journey to save his sister's soul, which was ripped in two when Nyatto tried to save her from Death. She trails after him, brain-dead. They encounter many brilliant, mind-bending situations, beginning with a disturbing magic show.

Where it came from
Cat Soup is a 2001 experimental short film produced by J.C. Staff, based on the surreal manga works of Nekojiru. The project was initiated following the artist's passing, with Tatsuo Sato directing the adaptation to capture the bleak, dreamlike, and often disturbing atmosphere of the source material. It was designed to function as a visual poem rather than a traditional narrative, utilizing a non-linear structure to depict a cat’s journey to the underworld to reclaim his sister’s soul.
The film is noted for its distinctive, minimalist art style, which strips away conventional animation flourishes to focus on haunting, abstract imagery. Masaaki Yuasa served as a creative force during production, contributing significantly to the film's chaotic and fluid animation aesthetic. Upon its release, it gained a reputation as a cult classic for its refusal to explain its own internal logic, becoming widely recognized for its profound influence on avant-garde anime.
