Where it came from
DAYS: Touin Gakuen-sen is a three-episode original video animation series released in 2018, serving as a direct continuation of the anime adaptation of Tsuyoshi Yasuda’s popular soccer manga. Produced by studio MAPPA, these OVAs were developed to cover the climactic qualifiers against Touin Academy, a storyline that bridged the narrative gap between the conclusion of the television series and subsequent developments in the source material. The project allowed the animation team to revisit the intense, character-driven sports action that defined the original show.
The animation maintained the aesthetic established by the television series, focusing on fluid depictions of fast-paced soccer matches and the personal growth of the protagonist, Tsukushi Tsukamoto. Directed by Kounosuke Uda, the production aimed to balance high-stakes athletic tension with the quiet, emotional camaraderie of the Seiseki High School team. Upon release, the episodes were well-received by fans of the series for providing a dedicated focus on the rivalry between Seiseki and Touin, effectively capturing the spirit of the manga’s intense tournament arcs.
