Where it came from
Ghastly Prince Enma Burning Up, known in Japan as Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera, was released in 2011 as a modern reimagining of Go Nagai’s classic 1970s supernatural manga and anime series. Produced by Studio Brain's Base and directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, the series was commissioned to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the original franchise, aiming to translate the surreal, dark humor of the original work into a contemporary animation style that balanced slapstick comedy with mature, grotesque horror elements.
The character designs were handled by Shinichi Yamaoka, who sought to maintain the nostalgic appeal of Nagai’s idiosyncratic art while incorporating updated visual sensibilities. The show is recognized for its eccentric tone and its willingness to lean into the subversive, often crude, comedic spirit of the original manga, resulting in a niche but dedicated following among fans of retro-revival horror-comedies who appreciated its refusal to modernize the source material beyond its original, irreverent boundaries.
