"If they have no water, then let them drink milk."
Before becoming a manga author, Hiromu Arakawa was a farmer for seven years in Hokkaido. She raised cows, grew vegetables, feared bears and got jerked around by squirrels! She worked all year long from morning to night without any breaks - and it was tough! If you read the manga, you'll understand. Farmers are cool!! The author of Fullmetal Alchemist presents her life of blood, sweat and laughter in comic (and now in anime) form!!

Where it came from
Hyakusho Kizoku, or The Farmer's Days, is a television anime series adapted from the autobiographical manga by Hiromu Arakawa. Produced by the studio Pie in the sky and released in 2023, the series chronicles Arakawa's lived experience working as a dairy farmer in Hokkaido before she rose to international prominence as the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist. The narrative serves as a candid, often humorous, and educational reflection on the realities of agricultural labor, local Japanese customs, and the complex relationship between humans and the natural environment.
The production design captures the distinct, rustic aesthetic of Arakawa's original manga illustrations, utilizing a simplified, expressive art style that focuses on the warmth and grit of farm life. The series was created to demystify the agricultural industry for urban audiences, balancing comedic anecdotes with earnest commentary on food security and rural life. It was well-received by fans of Arakawa's work for its heartfelt sincerity and provided a rare, intimate look at the author's formative years spent managing livestock and crops.
