Hyakumannen Attara, Dousuru?

Hyakumannen Attara, Dousuru? (If You Had One Million Years, What Would You Do?) is an experimental OVA released in 1993, directed by the acclaimed animator Koji Morimoto. Commissioned as part of a series of artistic projects intended to showcase avant-garde animation techniques, the film serves as a surreal meditation on time, human existence, and the existential weight of immortality. Its production is deeply rooted in the early 1990s Japanese animation scene, a period characterized by a surge in high-budget, experimental works that sought to push the medium beyond traditional commercial storytelling.

The film's visual identity is largely defined by Morimoto's idiosyncratic style, which prioritizes fluidity and dreamlike abstraction over conventional narrative structure. By utilizing bold color palettes and unconventional transitions, the design aims to evoke an introspective atmosphere rather than a linear experience. Upon its release, it was received primarily within niche circles of animation enthusiasts and critics who praised its departure from industry norms, solidifying Morimoto’s reputation as an auteur willing to challenge the aesthetic boundaries of the OVA format.
