Jiangnan

Jiangnan, released in 2019, is a Chinese animated feature film produced by SMG Pictures. Developed during a period of rapid growth and investment in the Chinese domestic animation industry, the project was designed to showcase both technical progress and cultural storytelling. The narrative is set during the late Qing Dynasty and focuses on a young protagonist who dreams of becoming a skilled naval engineer, blending elements of historical drama with themes of industrial ambition and national strength.

The film was created by a team at SMG Pictures with an emphasis on recreating the period-accurate machinery and maritime settings of the Jiangnan Shipyard. Artistically, the production aimed for a balance between traditional Chinese aesthetic sensibilities and contemporary digital animation techniques. Upon its release, the film was noted for its attempt to frame modern industrial aspirations within a historical context, drawing interest from audiences and critics engaged in the evolution of the 'guoman' or Chinese animation movement.
