Where it came from
Released in 1956 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Jiaoao de Jiangjun—or The Proud General—stands as a seminal work in the development of Chinese animation. Directed by Te Wei, the film was a deliberate attempt to move away from the influence of Soviet animation and Western styles, seeking instead to establish a distinctively Chinese aesthetic by drawing heavily from traditional Peking Opera, including the stylized character movements, facial makeup designs, and instrumental accompaniment.
The narrative follows a boastful general who loses his military edge through complacency and arrogance, ultimately allowing his foes to defeat him. The film was highly influential at the time for its integration of national art forms into the medium of animation, serving as a foundational piece for the 'ink-wash' and traditional theatrical styles that would define the studio's golden age for decades to come.
