Where it came from
Kenda Master Ken is a satirical web series that debuted in 2022, centering on the comedic and often absurd life of Master Ken, a martial arts instructor known for his fictitious 'Ameri-Do-Te' fighting style. The series was created and written by Matt Johnson, who also portrays the titular character. Developed as an extension of the popular YouTube series Enter the Dojo, this iteration transitioned into a more structured television format to explore the parody of traditional martial arts tropes and the hyper-masculine culture often found in combat sports studios.
The design and tone of the show rely heavily on the caricature of the 'McDojo' archetype, utilizing intentionally low-budget aesthetics and over-the-top acting to highlight the absurdity of its subject matter. Matt Johnson designed the character to serve as a mirror to self-serious martial arts instructors, with the series receiving a dedicated cult following among practitioners who appreciate the meta-commentary on the industry. It remains a notable example of niche, character-driven digital media successfully evolving into a formalized series format.
