Kero Kero Keroppi no Mitsubachi Daisoudou

Released in 1993, Kero Kero Keroppi no Mitsubachi Daisoudou is an original video animation produced by Sanrio to capitalize on the immense popularity of their Keroppi character during the early 1990s. As part of a larger multimedia strategy, Sanrio utilized these short-form OVAs to deepen the character's narrative world, framing Keroppi as a cheerful, adventurous frog residing in Donut Pond. These productions were intended for a younger demographic, emphasizing gentle, morality-driven storytelling that reflected the company's 'small gift, big smile' philosophy.

The production maintains the quintessential Sanrio aesthetic of the era, characterized by soft, rounded character designs and bright, welcoming color palettes designed to translate the stationery-based mascot into a dynamic visual format. While these OVAs were not intended for a broad cinematic release, they were well-received within the target Japanese market as home video staples. They played a vital role in cementing Keroppi as one of Sanrio’s core icons, second only to Hello Kitty in that period, by providing a consistent personality for a character that had previously existed mostly as static graphic design.
