Kero Kero Keroppi no Sanjuushi

Released in 1991, Kero Kero Keroppi no Sanjuushi is an animated feature film produced by Grouper Production for Sanrio. It draws inspiration from Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel The Three Musketeers, reimagining the narrative within the whimsical world of the Sanrio character Keroppi. This film was part of a broader late-80s and early-90s strategy by Sanrio to expand the reach of their character properties through direct-to-video and theatrical releases, leveraging their existing popularity in Japan to capture a younger demographic.

The character design reflects the simple, expressive aesthetic characteristic of Sanrio’s house style during that period, focusing on rounded shapes and accessible, friendly features. Grouper Production maintained the lighthearted tone essential to the Keroppi franchise, effectively blending the swashbuckling tropes of the original literary source material with the gentle, character-driven storytelling expected by fans. The film served to solidify Keroppi as one of the brand's top-tier icons, remaining a nostalgic touchstone for viewers of that era.
