Where it came from
Mashin Hero Wataru: The Seven Spirits of Ryujinmaru was released in 2020 as a nine-episode original net animation produced by Sunrise, intended to revive the beloved fantasy adventure franchise that originally premiered in the late 1980s. The series was designed to recapture the nostalgic spirit of the original show, focusing on the protagonist Wataru Ikusabe as he returns to the world of Soukaizan to face a new threat, utilizing the classic mecha-action formula that blended lighthearted humor with heroic fantasy tropes.
The character and mecha designs remained faithful to the series' iconic aesthetic, emphasizing the chibi-proportioned robots that were a hallmark of the franchise's toy-driven roots. Directed by Hiroshi Koujina, the production aimed to appeal to both long-time fans who grew up with the 1988 original and a modern audience, leaning into the property's deep history within the Sunrise studio’s extensive catalog of robot anime. It was received as a respectful, if concise, continuation of the series that maintained the visual tone established decades prior.
