Where it came from
Meoteoldosawa 108 Yogoe, released in 1990, stands as a notable entry in the South Korean animated film landscape, continuing the journey of the beloved character Meoteoldosawa. Created by Lee Doo-ho, the original manhwa character had already captured hearts through previous television adaptations, leading to this theatrical production that expanded the lore of the mischievous yet wise hermit-in-training.
The film was designed to bridge the gap between traditional Korean folk motifs and the evolving aesthetics of late-eighties animation. By focusing on the concept of one hundred and eight spirits—a nod to Buddhist significance adapted for a fantastical adventure—the filmmakers aimed to deliver a blend of moral education and slapstick fantasy. It remains a hallmark of the era, reflecting the distinct character design style of Lee Doo-ho, characterized by expressive, rounded features and a grounding in folklore.
