Where it came from
Meow Meow Japanese History, or Neko Neko Nihonshi, originated as a popular educational manga series created by Kenji Sugita before being adapted into a long-running anime franchise by Joker Films. The second season, released in 2017, continues the series' signature premise of reimagining pivotal figures and events from Japanese history as anthropomorphic cats. This stylistic choice was intended to make complex historical narratives accessible and engaging for younger audiences while maintaining a whimsical, lighthearted tone that distinguishes it from traditional historical dramas.
The animation style favored by Joker Films emphasizes vibrant, simplified character designs that allow for expressive physical comedy. Upon its broadcast, the series was received as a successful blend of edutainment, praised for its clever use of puns and its ability to condense centuries of political and cultural shifts into digestible, episodic segments. The second season cemented the show’s place in Japanese pop culture, balancing factual accuracy regarding the core historical events with the surreal, feline-centric world-building that became its calling card.
