Where it came from
Meow Meow Japanese History, or Neko Neko Nihonshi, debuted in 2016 as an animated adaptation of the popular manga series by Kenji Sogabe. Produced by Joker Films and directed by Tomohiro Kawamura, the series was designed to introduce Japanese historical figures to a younger audience by reimagining them as anthropomorphic cats. The project emerged from a trend of blending educational content with lighthearted, character-driven comedy, specifically targeting the intersection of history enthusiasts and fans of cute, feline-centered animation.
The character designs maintain a simplified, expressive aesthetic that emphasizes the distinct traits of historical icons while keeping them accessible and humorous. By leaning into the puns and behaviors associated with cats, the series provides a narrative lens that simplifies complex historical political shifts into relatable, episodic stories. Upon its release, the show was well-received for its creative educational approach, leading to a long-running broadcast schedule that has spanned multiple seasons and a feature-length film.
