The story centers around Ryōken, a young man who lamented his misfortune and despised temples and monks. He had placed all his hope on his unborn child, but an unfortunate incident took everything away from him. In his time of despair and suffering in the dark, Ryōken came across the preachings of the holy priest Rennyo. They tell the answer to "why we live," as revealed by the monk Shinran. Finding new meaning, Ryōken becomes Rennyo's apprentice. Angry at the increase of followers at Honnōdera, the other Buddhist sects chase Rennyo and Ryōken out of Kyoto. Seeking a new place of worship, the two arrive in Yoshizaki (Fukui) in the Hokuriku region.

Where it came from
Naze Ikiru: Rennyo Shounin to Yoshizaki Enjou was produced by Studio DEEN and released in 2016 as an animated feature film. The project was commissioned by the Shinshu Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism to commemorate the 550th anniversary of Rennyo Shounin's move to the Yoshizaki region. The film serves as a biographical dramatization of the life of Rennyo, a pivotal figure who revitalized the sect during the turbulent Muromachi period, and is based on the widely read book of the same title by Kentetsu Takamori.
The production sought to make complex Buddhist philosophy accessible to a modern audience through high-quality animation. Directed by Hideaki Oba, the film focuses on the emotional and spiritual trials Rennyo faced while establishing a community at Yoshizaki. While it was primarily distributed within the context of Buddhist outreach and screenings at temples, it was noted for its departure from traditional documentary styles, opting instead for a narrative-driven approach that emphasized personal struggle and historical setting.
