Osomatsu-kun

Osomatsu-kun debuted in 1966 as a black-and-white television series produced by Studio Zero and aired on the Mainichi Broadcasting System. Based on the classic gag manga by Fujio Akatsuka, the show centers on the mischief of the Matsuno sextuplets. Its adaptation reflected the zany, anarchic humor that defined Akatsuka's signature style, utilizing a minimalist aesthetic typical of the mid-1960s anime industry to emphasize slapstick visual gags.

The production sought to capture the chaotic energy of the original manga, which had already established the sextuplets as pop culture icons in Japan. While the series played a foundational role in the comedy subgenre of anime, it also established the character designs that would later be reimagined for the 1988 color series and the modern 2015 revival. The 1966 iteration is remembered primarily for its historical significance in bringing Akatsuka's complex, ensemble-driven storytelling to the television medium.
