Osomatsu-kun: Iyami wa Hitori Kaze no Naka

Released in 1990, Osomatsu-kun: Iyami wa Hitori Kaze no Naka serves as a standalone original video animation produced by Studio Pierrot. This project arrived during the height of the studio’s successful revival of Fujio Akatsuka’s classic 1960s manga, which had seen a significant resurgence in popularity following the 1988 television series. The narrative shifts focus away from the sextuplet brothers to center on the iconic antagonist Iyami, exploring a more somber, character-driven tone that contrasts with the slapstick comedy typical of the franchise.

The animation reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s and early 1990s Japanese production, emphasizing fluid character movement while retaining the distinct, simple geometric designs established by Akatsuka. As a specialized OVA release, it was designed to appeal to the established fanbase that had grown attached to the character-rich world of the series. The work is noted by animation historians for its willingness to experiment with Iyami’s characterization, moving beyond his role as a recurring comedic foil to provide a more introspective look at his lonely, wandering existence.
