The would-be hijinks of the mischievous Matsuno sextuplets are hijacked from episode one by colorful buck-toothed con man Iyami and Chibita, his bald munchkin sidekick. Nearly every episode is a standalone comedy cavalcade with the above cast as well as other quirky locals who show up in a number of different roles as the series shifts effortlessly between time periods and genres, but in most cases, Iyami and Chibita are front and center as partners in crime, a couple of sad sacks scraping by but carrying out scammy schemes in order to get rich quick.

Where it came from
Osomatsu-kun, which premiered in 1988, is the second anime adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka’s iconic 1962 manga series. Produced by Studio Pierrot, this version was created to revitalize the mischievous sextuplets for a new generation, shifting from the black-and-white aesthetic of the 1966 original to the vibrant, high-energy comedic style emblematic of late 1980s television animation.
The character designs were overseen by the creative team at Studio Pierrot, who leaned into the slapstick nature of the source material while introducing a more frantic, gag-heavy tone. The series became particularly well-regarded for its subversive humor and the memorable debut of Iyami’s signature 'Sheeh!' pose, which became a significant cultural touchstone in Japan long after the series concluded its broadcast run.
