Where it came from
Released in 2018, the Osomatsu-san Short Film Series emerged during the height of the franchise's revival, which began in 2015 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Fujio Akatsuka’s original Manga. Produced by Studio Pierrot, these shorts were designed to maintain the series' momentum between major broadcast seasons, offering bite-sized, surrealist comedy that leaned heavily into the chaotic, slapstick spirit of the original 1960s source material while updating the character dynamics for a modern audience.
The animation direction and character designs were helmed by Naoyuki Asano, who aimed to preserve the iconic simplicity of the sextuplets while injecting a distinct, vibrant visual energy that facilitated the show’s trademark rapid-fire humor. These shorts were received as a welcome expansion of the Osomatsu-san universe, successfully bridging the narrative gaps between the first and second seasons by focusing on the mundane and often absurd daily lives of the brothers.
