On a splendid morning, an effervescently cheerful teenaged schoolgirl named A-ko sets off for school with her delightfully ditzy friend, C-ko. The duo are students in a marvelous futuristic city, but A-ko is about to run afoul of the wealthy and powerful B-ko, a young lady used to getting everything she wants—and what she wants is C-ko! Also, a vast and powerful alien fleet is about to touch down in Graviton City, and they're after something, too. Fortunately for us, A-ko’s no ordinary schoolgirl—she’s got super powers of her own!

Where it came from
Project A-ko was produced by the studio APPP and released in 1986, emerging during a period of creative experimentation in the Japanese original video animation market. The film was conceived as a lighthearted parody that mashed up elements from various popular science fiction and high school drama series of the era, most notably referencing the long-running franchise Creamy Mami and the rivalry dynamics of various mecha shows.
Directed by Katsuhiko Nishijima, the production is frequently cited for its high-energy animation quality and its tongue-in-cheek approach to tropes common in 1980s anime. By subverting genre conventions through chaotic slapstick and over-the-top action sequences, the film achieved a cult following both in Japan and internationally, eventually becoming a representative title for the decade's broader trend of self-referential animation.
