Where it came from
Shiwan Ge Leng Xiaohua 2, or 100,000 Bad Jokes 2, was released in 2017 as a sequel to the 2014 original, which itself began as a flash animation series created by Han Wu on the platform U17. The production was spearheaded by the animation studio Lu Ding Ji, aiming to expand the surreal, parodic, and often absurd humor that defined the franchise's exploration of Chinese internet culture and mythology.
The film was directed by Lu Hengyu and Li Shijie, who sought to refine the visual quality of the series while maintaining its signature irreverent tone. The narrative structure, which parodies time travel and classic storytelling tropes, was designed to appeal to a younger audience familiar with the subculture of the original web series, leading to a generally positive reception for its comedic timing and its distinct stylistic evolution from its amateur-animated roots.
