Animated graduation work by Touko Yatabe from Musashino Art University.
One day, Rintarou breaks the konoha fossil that his father cherished. Without being able to tell the truth, a feeling of guilt lingers. In the usual riverbank, where I was digging fossils, I met a strange boy, Toshi... A small fantasy of a summer woven by two boys and a stratum accumulates memories.

Where it came from
Summer of Fossil Leaves was produced in 2014 as an animated short film within the academic environment of Musashino Art University in Tokyo. It emerged from the university’s Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences, a program known for fostering experimental techniques and narrative-driven animation. The project reflects the institution's commitment to individual artistic expression, serving as a platform for emerging animators to explore themes of memory, nature, and the passage of time through traditional and digital mixed-media workflows.
The film’s design language is rooted in the school's emphasis on tactile storytelling, utilizing a minimalist aesthetic to evoke the quiet intensity of a Japanese summer. The creators focused on a subdued color palette and deliberate pacing, aiming to contrast the stillness of fossilized history with the ephemeral movement of the natural world. Upon its internal release and subsequent exhibition in collegiate showcases, the piece was received as a thoughtful, atmospheric exercise that highlights the distinctive stylistic maturity often found in student work from this prestigious art conservatory.
