A short film only screened at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. The nine-minute short adapts a picture book by Rieko Nakagawa and Yuriko Yamawaki, the author and illustrator of two previous books that inspired Ghibli shorts (Sora Iro no Tane, The Whale Hunt).
A boy named Yuji and his friend Gick, a rabbit, find a walking stick. To decide which of them will keep it, they try a foot race, a long jump and sumo wrestling, but each ends up in a tie. Out of ideas, the children go to Gick's Granny for help. Granny tells the children to go treasure hunting. Who will be the winner?

Where it came from
Treasure Hunting, known in Japanese as Takara Sagashi, was produced by Studio Ghibli in 2011 specifically for exclusive screening at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the short film continues the tradition of creating unique, non-theatrical experiences that allow the studio to experiment with smaller-scale narratives and artistic techniques outside the pressures of a feature-length production.
The film follows two young boys who discover an old map that leads them on a whimsical journey through a forest, emphasizing the sense of wonder and exploration central to Miyazaki's work. Its visual style is characterized by the soft, hand-painted backgrounds and expressive character animation that define the Ghibli aesthetic, reflecting a deliberate focus on the innocence of childhood discovery that resonates with the museum’s core audience.
