Tribe Cool Crew

Tribe Cool Crew was produced by Sunrise and premiered in 2014 as a dedicated effort to promote dance culture among younger audiences in Japan. Developed in collaboration with Avex Music Creative, the series centers on a group of middle school students who form a dance crew to express themselves and navigate their academic lives. The production was notable for its focus on authentic choreography and the integration of professional dance techniques into its narrative structure, reflecting a period where dance education was becoming a formalized part of the Japanese junior high school curriculum.

The character designs and animation were handled by the veteran team at Sunrise, aiming for a vibrant, energetic aesthetic that could balance the physical demands of high-motion dance sequences with the grounded tone of a teen drama. The series was designed to serve as both an entertainment piece and a pedagogical tool, utilizing the popularity of the hip-hop and street dance movements of the early 2010s to engage viewers. It was well-received within its target demographic, particularly for its commitment to accurately representing various dance styles and the collaborative spirit of competitive performance.
