When Kamogawa Asumi was just a baby, her mother was grievously injured when a rocket crashed to the ground. Five years later, having been in a coma all the time, Asumi's mother finally dies, and the little girl struggles to come to terms with the death of a mother she barely remembers. In the midst of her turmoil, she meets "Lion-san", a strange figure wearing a lion mask and claiming to be a ghost. Lion-san helps Asumi to bury her mother's ashes, and finally, Asumi reaches her own decision: "When I grow up, I'm going to be a rocket pilot."

Where it came from
Twin Spica was produced by Group TAC and originally aired in 2003, adapted from the manga series by Kou Yaginuma. The series follows a young girl named Asumi Kamogawa as she trains at the Tokyo Space School, set in an era where Japan has suffered a catastrophic space shuttle disaster. The narrative focuses on themes of grief, perseverance, and the emotional toll of pursuing high-stakes dreams in the wake of national tragedy.
The animation reflects a grounded, character-driven approach consistent with Group TAC’s style during the early 2000s. By centering on the intimate personal development of the students rather than high-octane science fiction tropes, the show was received as a contemplative and often poignant exploration of adolescence. Its design prioritizes emotional expression and atmospheric storytelling, establishing it as a quiet, introspective entry in the space-exploration genre.
