In a place and time where disasters are commonplace, Oko and Seiji cater to local customers at Izumoya, their renowned rental shop for everyday items. Mixed with Izumoya’s regular inventory are tsukumogami, ancient spirits disguised as ordinary objects. Unlike most people, Oko and Seiji can see and listen to the spirits, and Izumoya becomes a hub of paranormal activity as numerous tsukumogami end up in the shop. And when Oko and Seiji spread the supernatural love by lending their “special” tsukumogami to unwitting customers, things get really interesting!

Where it came from
We Rent Tsukumogami, known in Japanese as Tsukumogami Kashimasu, was produced by Telecom Animation Film and released in 2018. The series is based on the light novel collection by Megumi Nakamura, which reimagines the traditional Japanese concept of tsukumogami—household objects that acquire a spirit after existing for one hundred years—within the lively, merchant-focused setting of the Edo period. The narrative follows a pair of siblings who operate an antique rental shop, lending out these sentient artifacts to the local populace.
The anime adaptation is noted for its period-accurate aesthetic and a focus on the sentimental attachments between humans and their belongings. Directed by Masahiko Murata, the production sought to capture the atmosphere of the Fukagawa district, blending elements of slice-of-life storytelling with mild supernatural intrigue. While it garnered attention for its unique premise and focus on craftsmanship, it was received as a niche entry in the seasonal anime landscape, appreciated primarily by viewers interested in historical settings and character-driven, episodic narratives.
