Where it came from
Released in 1999, You're Under Arrest: Diverting Traffic at the Beach serves as a standalone special, or original video animation (OVA), extending the popular police procedural comedy series by Kosuke Fujishima. The production, handled by Studio Deen and distributed by Bandai Visual, sought to capture the relaxed, character-driven charm of the Bokuto Police Station staff during a comedic summer getaway. It fits within the late 90s trend of high-quality, supplemental anime episodes designed to keep fans engaged between major seasons of established franchises.
The character designs maintain the aesthetic established by Atsuko Nakajima, who translated Fujishima's manga style into the fluid animation iconic to the series. The narrative focuses on the dynamic between partners Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa, emphasizing the lighthearted workplace humor and technical police-procedural details that define the franchise. Upon release, the special was well-received by the existing fanbase for its faithful characterization and its ability to balance slapstick comedy with the series' signature focus on vehicular interest.
