Yuri on Ice Side Story: Welcome to The Madness

Welcome to The Madness was released in 2017 as a special bonus episode included with the Blu-ray and DVD box set of the hit figure skating anime Yuri on Ice. Produced by studio MAPPA, the short was designed as a creative expansion of the series' lore, specifically focusing on the character Yuri Plisetsky and his exhibition performance. It serves as a visual and musical companion to the original broadcast, aiming to satisfy fan interest in the elaborate routines and internal monologues that define the sport's dramatic presentation.

The animation and direction for this side story maintain the fluid, high-fidelity aesthetic developed by the original production team. The narrative design highlights the tension and perfectionism inherent in competitive skating, a core theme established by creator Mitsurou Kubo and director Sayo Yamamoto. Upon release, it was warmly received by the series' dedicated audience, who valued the additional insight into the choreography and the character dynamics that had been established during the show's initial 2016 run.
