Authenticity of the Second Letter to the Thessalonians

Originally published in German in 1903 under the title 'Die Echtheit des zweiten Thessalonicherbriefes,' this seminal work by William Wrede emerged during a pivotal era of critical biblical scholarship. Wrede, a central figure in the history-of-religions school, sought to apply rigorous historical-critical methods to the New Testament, challenging long-held assumptions regarding the Pauline authorship of the second letter to the Thessalonians. His analytical approach shifted the academic landscape, emphasizing the necessity of evaluating internal textual evidence against the broader theological and historical context of early Christianity.

The 2017 Wipf & Stock edition serves as an accessible bridge for contemporary scholars and students to engage with Wrede’s foundational arguments. While Wrede's original text faced significant pushback from conservative theologians of his time who defended traditional authorship, his work remains a benchmark for the methodology of modern biblical criticism. By isolating linguistic and thematic inconsistencies between the two letters, Wrede established a scholarly framework that continues to be cited in academic discourse regarding the authenticity of the Pauline epistles.
