Bernd Zimmer

Published in 2001 by Wienand, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of the work of Bernd Zimmer, a prominent figure in the Neue Wilde movement. Emerging from the German art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Zimmer became recognized for his expressive, vibrant approach to painting that moved away from conceptual constraints toward a more visceral engagement with landscapes and raw color. This volume was curated to document his evolution through the turn of the millennium, offering a scholarly bridge between his early stylistic experimentation and his more mature, meditative compositions.

The editorial work of Georg Reinhardt serves to contextualize Zimmer’s oeuvre within the broader trajectory of contemporary European painting. The design of the book emphasizes the physicality of Zimmer's brushwork, utilizing high-quality reproductions that allow the reader to engage with the texture and intensity of his color palettes. Upon its release, the publication was received as an essential reference for those tracking the transition of the Neue Wilde artists into the post-Cold War era, noted for its thorough cataloging of his thematic focus on the relationship between man and the natural world.
