Bernd Zimmer

Published in 1982 by Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, this monograph serves as a significant documentation of Bernd Zimmer's early career. Emerging from the vibrant and expressive Neo-Expressionist movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Zimmer was a central figure in the 'Neue Wilde'—or New Fauves—group in Berlin. This catalog was produced during a formative period when Zimmer was gaining international recognition for his intense, large-format landscape paintings, which rejected the cool detachment of Conceptualism in favor of raw color and gestural energy.

The publication captures the aesthetic shift toward a renewed interest in figurative painting that defined the German art scene at the time. Curated to accompany exhibitions of his work, the volume provides insight into the artist’s process of capturing existential landscapes, from mountain ranges to turbulent seas. It was received as an essential reference for understanding the emotional urgency that characterized the decade's movement, solidifying Zimmer's reputation as a pivotal voice in contemporary German art.
